Air, Sky, Land, Water. Ric Standridge

Air, Sky, Land, Water. Ric Standridge

November greetings collector friends!  How thrilling and what a priviledge to work with Ric Standridge at A&L this month!  Ric has been high on our artist wish list for some time and his first show at the gallery is set for November 20-22, 2014. You don’t want to miss this!

Entitled AIR, this is an original, completely new project by artist Ric Standridge who many of you know by the “huge energetic live performance, and music infused action paintings.”  However, I was around to witness his traditionally glazed, multiple-layered landscape paintings take shape.  Referred to as “skyscapes,” Standridge is back at it again for the first time since his last collective showing in 2004.  In the earl 80’s, just about the time that I met him, Lake Williams of the Greenville Little Theatre hired Ric to paint huge scenery backdrops.  Ric felt “the skies were so much better than the trees,” and that resonated with him, so much that it launched his painting career.  Today his skyscapes can be found in many private collections in our region.

From Both Sides

From Both Sides

Greatly influenced by his mother and Pablo Picasso, Ric remembers as a very young boy, sitting on the floor and drawing for hours on the white cardboard inserts that his mother brought home from the sewing room where she was employed. From his earliest years, both he and his mother sensed that he was wired to be an artist.

Pablo Picasso’s influence, on the other hand, was felt as Ric studied the master’s techniques in order to hone his skills. During his time at Ringling School of Art, in the midst of a figure drawing session, professor Cassondra James tapped him on the shoulder and said, “Standridge, why don’t you try to paint the spirit of that bird rather than the feathers of that bird?”  Ric comments that “he hasn’t seen a bird since that day.” Every painting he creates begins with meditation and becomes spiritual to him in some way or another.

The paintings shown at our November 20th opening combine the old master skies Ric is well known for, yet some of the works will be significant departures.  Maybe some of those people Ric wishes he had spent time with long ago will show up in this work…will it be Warhol, Van Gogh, the Beatles, Da Vinci, his sweet, wise, and strong mother?  Maybe it will be obvious, maybe not, but for sure it will be a Ric Standridge art experience that will touch a collector, another artist, a child with a box of fresh crayons or maybe even you!

Do join us for the opening reception of AIR, A Survey of Skyscapes by Ric Standridge. Thursday, Nov. 20th, 6:00-8:00 pm.  The show is a three day event.  Nov. 20 – Nov. 22.
