We are excited to highlight how complex neutrals can really be with the help of Teresa Roche's keen eye. For the next few weeks, our front room in the gallery will house a collection of works curated by Teresa to illustrate what we mean.
"As a designer engaged in the act of creating, but also interpreting, objects and art, I am constantly reminded of their mysterious power to tell stories, evoke memories, and offer comfort."
~ John Derian
As a teenager I worked as a gift wrapper after school every day in a local fine jewelry store where they also had a bridal registry stocked with fine china and sterling silver. It is there that I became aware of fine gems, porcelains and metals, laying the foundation for my love of art and theatre. The 20 years I spent doing local musical theatre began to shape my appreciation for the genius of set design and over the years became the catalyst for my interest in art, interior design and textile design.
My innate curiosity about living spaces and the power of neutrality and negative space has come full circle and I curated this show to show how both calm and timeless grounding in a space and deep and rich colors can play effortlessly together.
The front room of Art & Light is bathed in Alabaster paint by Sherwin Williams with bright natural light and a mantle painted in Sherwin Williams Green Black. I have selected works that are layered and sophisticated with texture and loads of contrast. Starting with neutral walls and classic furniture makes it easier to nudge forward with the art that you love. I also feel a kindred spirit with many of the artists selected for this exhibit and was careful to select work that created a subtle contrast without overpowering the neutral palette. Combining artistic styles that seem to almost speak to one another in conversation both on the walls or within the shelves is my way of approaching the white walls. The magic of monochromatic is revealed here.
