BTS | A Few Questions with Lauren Bolshakov

Q: Flowers and floral motifs seem to be a consistent subject in your work. What draws you to flowers and how do you find variation in the subject matter?

A: I seem to always circle back to flowers because they embody both beauty and impermanence. I love the dance between delicate yet resilient, and the fact that they are constantly changing โ€”blooming, wilting, and returning in cycles. This mirrors life in a way that feels deeply personal and universal at the same time. I am drawn to bouquets and arrangements particularly because they reflect our instinct to hold onto the most beautiful moments, even though life is by definition transient. Abstraction allows me to explore this tension through layers of color, texture, and mark-making in a way that realism cannot. All of this and I love their organic shapes.

Q: Do you have a favorite flower?

A: If I had to pickโ€ฆ I love Lenten Roses, Hydrangeas, Ranunculus, Peonies, and Irises and all of those wildflowers with long leggy limbs the most.

Q: Can you describe your painting process?  Do you start with a sketch or line drawing? How do you layer the paint as the painting progresses?

A: The way I paint is a balance of control and release. The first layer is one of my favorite parts of the processโ€”it sets the foundation that the rest of the piece will respond to. Itโ€™s also the most fluid and intuitive, requiring trust in the process as it unfolds naturally. From there, I build tension and depth using varying opacities of paint, soft gestural mark-making, and a mix of materials.

Q: In addition to your painting practice, youโ€™re also an interior designer. Do you find that working as a visual artist makes you a better designer?

A: I definitely think Iโ€™m a better designer because Iโ€™m an artist firstโ€”my ability to see, interpret, and create goes beyond just aesthetics. As an artist, you have to understand compositions, balance, and contrast intuitively. Having a deep understanding of color is also extremely helpful- the way light shifts throughout the day, and how colors play off one another. I think that what draws people into my art is the same thing that draws them into my designs, layers, play, intentionality and thoughtfulness.
