In one of my first painting classes in college a professor gave us a semester-long assignment to work on a series of paintings depicting the subject matter of our choosing. The caveat: we were required to paint the entire series in the same size and format.  Not until the class critique at the end of the semester, when each student installed their series of paintings on the walls of the studio classroom, did I realize the impact of working in the same size repeatedly.  The repetition in size created consistency in each body of work.  While there was certainly evolution from one painting to the next, the limitation in scale formed a cohesive body of work. With that exercise I realized the impact and possibility in working sequentially on a smaller scale.

The Art & Light 18th Anniversary Annual Small Works Exhibition creates the same surprising sense of cohesion while highlighting a wide variety of work by 43 participating artists.

The symmetry of the installation and consistency in scale makes the work come together in a way that is both thoughtful and harmonious, which makes a compelling case for collecting art in this way.

Collecting small work over time will create the same intriguing and impactful installation in your home.

Small work also gives the collector more flexibility when changing spaces or working out art placement in multiple rooms. It can move to almost any wall in the home to stand alone, they can be added to another grouping to give the composition an element of quirk, or the right piece in the right hue can change the composition of a large wall dramatically.

We canโ€™t forget to mention affordability when it comes to small work as well. If you love an artist but arenโ€™t ready to make a major financial investment in larger, more focal work, start small!  You can add to your collection in small steps without worrying that you arenโ€™t ready to commit - sort of like testing the water before you jump in.

With our anniversary exhibition of small works still in full swing through August 31st, 2024, now is a great time to see what collecting (small) is all about and we are here and excited to give you some tips and tricks. Simply pop in or reach out to us and we will be thrilled to chat!
